Common Reasons of Visa Refusal of Korea

By: Bhishan Joshi October 19, 2025 3 min read time.

A Korean student visa (D-2) rejection can be disappointing and stressful. The Korean immigration and embassy authorities are primarily concerned with whether an applicant is a genuine student who will comply with the visa rules and leave the country after their studies.

Here are the most common reasons for a Korean student visa rejection, categorized for clarity.

1. Financial Capability Issues

This is one of the most frequent reasons for rejection.

  • Insufficient Proof of Funds: You must demonstrate that you (or your sponsor) have enough money to cover both tuition and living expenses for at least the first year. The required amount changes, but it’s typically around $20,000 USD or more.

  • Unclear Source of Funds: Simply having money in a bank account is not enough. You must prove where the money came from. If it’s from a parent’s salary, you need to provide their employment verification.

  • Unreliable Sponsor: The financial sponsor should ideally be a direct family member (parent). If the sponsor is a distant relative, it can lead to visa refusal.

  • Inconsistent Financial Documents: The bank statement balance, the bank certificate, and the sponsor’s income documents must all be consistent and tell a coherent story.

2. Academic Background and Intent

Immigration needs to be convinced you are going to Korea primarily to study.

  • Academic Gaps: Unexplained long gaps between your previous education and your visa application can be suspicious. As of now, only 3 years of gap is accepted by the Embassy of Republic of Korea.

  • Low Academic Performance: Poor grades from your previous school can suggest you are not a serious student.

  • Language Proficiency Inability: For English-taught programs, not meeting the university’s IELTS/TOEFL requirement will be the problem.

3. Documentation Errors

Small mistakes can have big consequences.

  • Incomplete or Incorrect Application Form: Any discrepancies, blank fields, missing signatures or information that doesn’t match your supporting documents can lead to a rejection.

  • Missing or Forged Documents: Submitting fake documents (bank statements) is the fastest way to get a rejection and a potential long-term ban from entering Korea. Always provide genuine documents.

  • Expired Documents: Ensure all documents, especially the Certificate of Admission from the university, Ward and Municipal Documents and the bank statements, are recent and not expired. Normally Korean embassy accepts one month old bank documents and 3 months of Ward documents.

4. Immigration History

If the students wish to apply from the Korean immigration, then the visa history are checked thoroughly and previous refusal in any sort of visa from the Embassy will be denied from the immigration as well. This is particularly should be taken care by students in the case of E-visa.

How to Strengthen Your Application and Avoid Rejection:

  1. Start Early and Be Thorough: Do not rush. Gather all documents carefully.

  2. Be 100% Truthful: Never, under any circumstances, submit fraudulent documents.

  3. Prepare a Strong Statement of Purpose (SOP): This is your chance to tell your story. Explain clearly:

    • Why Korea? (Specific programs, professors, Korea’s strength in that field).

    • Why this university?

    • How does this program fit into your long-term career goals in your home country?

  4. Double-Check Financials: Ensure your bank statements are stable and you have clear proof of the source.

If your visa is rejected, the embassy will usually provide a reason code. You can sometimes appeal the decision or reapply, but you must directly address the reason for the initial rejection in your new application.
